October 11th marked the 10th annual celebration of International Day of the Girl Child. This year’s theme “Our time is now—our rights, our future" focused on empowering girls to overcome daunting challenges to complete their education and become part of a brighter future for Sierra Leone.

This hopeful message for girls is a big change in a culture where a generation ago women were not thought worthy of being sent to school.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Gender and Children’s affairs, EduNations was well represented among over 20 other partner organizations who spoke on critical issues such as supporting physical and mental health, avoiding early pregnancy, and promoting safeguards against sexual violence.

It was an especially exciting day in the community of Mapainda where EduNations has over 300 girls in our primary and junior secondary schools. Our students staged a beautiful drama entitled “The Agony of Isatu” whose message underlined the importance of avoiding pregnancy and staying in school.

EduNations is committed not just to formal education but also to help girls to grow to become changemakers driving progress in their communities. We stand accountable – with and for girls – and to invest in a future that believes in their agency, leadership, and potential.

The girls in the remote villages served by EduNations can have realistic hope of completing their thanks to your support.
