Providing a Place to Call Home: The Gbenekoro Teachers' Housing Project

In the remote village of Gbenekoro, Sierra Leone, EduNations is taking an important step forward in caring for the teachers who have committed their lives to educating students in some of the most under-resourced communities in the country. The Gbenekoro Teachers' Housing Project is part of a broader initiative to ensure every EduNations teacher has access to safe, secure, and dignified living conditions.

Teachers assigned to Gbenekoro leave behind the comfort of their home villages and cities to live and work in this rural Muslim community. Until now, these educators have had to find their own housing—often renting single rooms from local families. While villagers have opened their homes graciously, these arrangements have not always provided the privacy, safety, or sanitation our teachers deserve. Many have lived in cramped quarters, without adequate bathroom facilities or secure environments to rest and prepare for each school day.

Recognizing these challenges, EduNations launched the Gbenekoro Teachers' Housing Project to provide private apartments for our teachers—giving them a clean, reliable, and safe place to live just steps from the classroom. These new housing blocks offer:

  • Privacy, allowing teachers personal space to rest and recharge
  • Security, with well-constructed and lockable units
  • Sanitary conditions, which contribute to their overall health and well-being

These seemingly simple improvements can make a world of difference. When teachers feel respected, cared for, and supported in their daily lives, they are better equipped to serve students with excellence and commitment.

The Gbenekoro project is just one part of EduNations’ long-term vision. Our goal is to construct teacher housing blocks in each of the six communities we serve. To date, we have already completed housing units in Mapainda, Mabum Station (Makump), and Fintonia. With Gbenekoro nearing completion, we look forward to extending this effort to the remaining communities—ensuring that no matter where an EduNations teacher serves, they will have a safe and comfortable place to call home.

At EduNations, we believe investing in our teachers is investing in our students’ futures. The Gbenekoro Teachers' Housing Project reflects that belief in action—strengthening not only our educators’ well-being, but also the long-term success of our mission to ignite hope in the forgotten communities of Sierra Leone through quality education.

When teachers have a place to call home, students have a stronger foundation to build their future.

With only $7,000 still needed, our goal is to have this project completed by the start of the new school year this September.
